Mont Saint Michel in NormandyBack in the Easter holidays of 2016 we decided to head off to Brittany on one of our many camping holidays.
We stayed at a campsite called Domaine des Ormes which is very near to the town of Dol de Bretagne. One of the fantastic places very near to the campsite is the wonderful Mont Saint Michel! We'd never visited it before and I have to say we were amazed by the sheer size of this wonderful town and monastery. As we approached the area, Mont Saint Michel could be seen from miles away. Although we stayed in Brittany, Mont Saint Michel is just across the border in Normandy. The parking area has been updated in recent years so you now have to park some way away near to the visitors centre. Although the car park is located some way away, you have the option of walking across to the town, catching a horse and cart or one of the many shuttle busses. On our visit, as we have three children, we decided to take one of the shuttle busses. There are very busy at certain times of the day but they run constantly throughout the day. Visiting Mont Saint Michel is not for the fainthearted. Although we were up for the trip, the many steps that lead up to the abbey at the top, meant that by the time we reached the top our two youngest children were too tired to go any further and so we returned back to the bottom. Eating on Mont Saint Michel is easy. There are plenty of great restaurants but we decided to take our own lunch and had a few sandwiches as we walked up the paths. The views, as you can see from the photos are truly wonderful and we'd recommend a trip here in a heartbeat. Our plan is to return to Mont Saint Michel in a few years time when our children are a little older and will be able to appreciated the sheer size and scale of the town and abbey!
